When we speak about tourism, too often the conversation begins and ends with the number of foreign visitors. But a nation as vast and diverse as Indonesia deserves a more sophisticated lens one that sees tourism not merely as an industry, but as an orchestrator of growth across ministries, sectors, and communities.

Under the leadership of Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism has moved beyond traditional silos to build an ecosystem that mobilizes multiple ministries from transportation and infrastructure to culture, environment, digital economy, and MSMEs. The result is not only the achievement of measurable targets but also a cascading multiplier effect that touches local livelihoods, creative industries, and regional development.

A Multi-Ministerial Orchestra That Delivers

Tourism is now treated as a composite value chain. Every dollar spent by a visitor circulates through transport, accommodation, food production, crafts, logistics, and technology. The World Bank estimates Indonesia’s tourism multiplier between 1.7 and 3.0 meaning every rupiah spent by a tourist can generate up to three rupiah in broader economic value.

The results are clear: in 2024, Indonesia welcomed 13.74 million international visitors an 18 percent increase from the previous year. Domestic trips soared to 1.02 billion, up 22 percent, while tourism employment rose to 25 million workers. These figures are not just statistics; they represent millions of households participating in the nation’s economic revival.

This success was not accidental. It stems from a coordinated national policy where tourism acts as an anchor for regional investment, infrastructure, and MSME empowerment. The Ministry’s framework particularly the National Tourism-Economy Nexus (KEN) ensures that growth translates into tangible community benefits.

Beyond Growth: Signalling Value to the World

Equally vital is Indonesia’s role on the international stage. Minister Widiyanti’s recent visit to the World Travel Market (WTM) London 2025 sent a powerful signal to our global counterparts: Indonesia is not just open for tourism we are open for quality partnerships.

At WTM London, the Indonesia Pavilion carried the theme “Go Beyond Ordinary”, showcasing our focus on gastronomy, wellness, and marine tourism. These are not slogans but strategic pillars aligned with global trends of experiential, sustainable travel. By leading the delegation personally, the Minister demonstrated political commitment at the highest level a message that resonates deeply with investors, tour operators, and governments seeking reliability and innovation.

The presence of Indonesia at one of the world’s largest tourism trade fairs also served as soft power diplomacy. It projected a nation confident in its direction: a data-driven, sustainability-oriented Indonesia, ready to lead the region in quality tourism.

Tourism as a National Mission

For Indonesia, tourism must be more than an economic sector it must be a national mission. Its success depends on orchestration: a Ministry of Tourism that acts as a conductor aligning the instruments of transport, digitalization, cultural preservation, and environmental stewardship.

In doing so, the nation can continue to deliver outcomes that go beyond headcounts. The true measure of success will be how deeply the benefits of tourism penetrate into the lives of ordinary Indonesians farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs alike.

As we look ahead, the message is clear: when ministries move in harmony, tourism becomes not just a driver of growth, but a multiplier of prosperity and unity for Indonesia.
